Pursuant to A.R.S. 15-351 as defined in Policy CFD, notice is hereby given to the members of the Site Council of HOLBROOK JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL and to the general public, that the Site Council will hold a meeting open to the public on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2019- BEGINNING AT 3:30 PM (MST), in the conference room of HOLBROOK JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL, located at 412 West Buffalo Street,Holbrook, AZ 86025.

         V.             Student Council Update - Joy Burroughs

  1. A student council convention is being planned to invite other schools to learn about how to hold student council.  The committee asked for more information - Beth Plumb will address the committee.

       VI.           Old Business

  1. Follow up to discussion regarding homeroom mentors making sure to check grades and missing assignments.

  2. Follow up to the discussion about student council having difficulty accomplishing everything they want or need to in the short 20 minute time frame once a week.

  3. Follow up discussion regarding providing snacks during afternoon break - Mrs. Alley will report on this project.

SITE COUNCIL MINUTES - October 29, 2018



  1. Call to Order / Pledge  - The meeting was called to order at 3:42pm.

  2. Roll Call:

      III.        Approval of Minutes from September 25, 2018

  1. Members read over the minutes that were provided and no discussion was needed.  A typing error was corrected to remove the word at from the informational items.  A motion was made and carried to approve the minutes.

       IV.           Informational Items

  1.   November 12, 2018 - Veteran’s Day - No School

  2.  November 13, 2018 - Governing Board Meeting

  3.  November 19 -23, 2018 - Thanksgiving Break       

                 

         V.             Student Council Update - Joy Burroughs

  1. The Halloween Extravaganza was a huge success and everyone on the committee had great things to say about how well it was received.  Joy reported that there were some students with left over tickets and and they will be given an opportunity to redeem them on Wednesday, October 31st.   

      B. Student Council is hoping to plan for another similar activity after AZMERIT

              testing in the spring.  The parents on SITE council offered to help as needed.

      C. Joy reported that they are looking to replace one 8th grader on student

             council and 4 more 6th graders will be joining Student Council in January.


       VI.           Old Business

  1. Mentors will be asked to print the flagged assignments for their students on Mondays as a way to help bridge the communication gap between parents, students, and teachers.  

  2. Dr. McKinnon is going to hold a mandatory staff meeting to go over this policy.  


      VII.           New Business

       A. Dr. McKinnon informed the Site Council of the hopes of starting a Hip Hop       

              Dance Club at H.J.H.S.  It would be under the direction of Jamie Justman and   

              Rhiannon Westover.  The students in the club would perform at upcoming

              events such as Parade of Lights and basketball games.  A motion was made

              to approve the club and that Dr. McKinnon should take this idea to the

              school board for approval.  The motion was carried.

       B. Tanya Phatorus asked if we could adjust our meeting dates to be on

                                          Mondays due to the majority of members participating in Power of 5 on

                                          Tuesdays. Discussion was held and everyone agreed to changing the

                                          meetings to the last Monday of the month.


    VIII.          Round Table Discussion

  1. Rosa Alley brought to the attention of the Site Council her concern regarding communication for awards assemblies and concerts.

  1. Activities and announcements are posted on the school website

       2 . Dr. McKinnon will resend a list of dates to Teri Tafoya to be added to  

              school calendar.

  1. Rosa Alley wanted to let the Site Council know her appreciation for Mr. Adams and the wonderful job he did at the concerts Tuesday and Wednesday.


      IX.      Next meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 26, 2018  but will only occur if the

      council deems it necessary.  Communication will come regarding the status of this  

      meeting as the date approaches.


       X.    Adjournment - The meeting was adjourned at 4:48pm.

  1. During P/T conferences, mentors should share communication on accessing parent portal.  

  1. Mentors will be asked to print progress reports for their students on Thursdays as a way to help bridge the communication gap between parents, students, and teachers.

  2. Mentors will be provided with parent Infinite Campus login information to share at P/T conferences as needed.


       VI.          New Business

      A. Approval to combine individual athletic and music accounts into one athletic

                                           account and one music account. - Jeri McKinnon

   

  1. Dr McKinnon explained the reasoning for this change.  Rosa Alley made a motion to approve that the individual athletic and music account be combined into one music account and one athletic account.  Nichole Tow seconded the motion, and it was passed unanimously.

        B. Joy Burroughs will be added to the membership of this committee.  She will

                add the agendas and minutes to the website, as well as contribute

                information from Student Council to the team.

      VII.          Round Table Discussion

  1. Rosa Alley shared that she is pursuing to help the schools develop a program that provides snacks for the afternoon break.  

  2. Rosa Alley brought to the attention of the Site Council her concern for the safety of the students during P.E. due to large class sizes and limited supervision in the locker rooms.


    VIII.          Next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 30, 2018.

A.  Karen Estridge was appointed the secretary for Site Council for the  

      2018-2019 school year.  The vote was unanimous.

B.  Dates were set for the remaining meetings for this year.  They will be on

      the last Tuesday of the month @3:30pm.  The committee agreed that

      each meeting would not last more than 45 minutes.
