Earlier this season, our 8th grade girls basketball team made a deal with Mr. McDaniel, our 8th grade Pre-Algebra teacher: if they won the White Mountain League, they could shave his head. True to his word, he agreed—and our girls delivered!

Today, during our student council class games, the entire school gathered to watch the big event as the team proudly shaved Mr. McDaniel’s head. The energy, laughter, and school spirit in the room were unforgettable.

Thank you, Mr. McDaniel, for being such an incredible sport and for always going above and beyond to support and motivate our students. That kind of commitment is what makes our school so special.

And wow… we didn’t realize you had that much hair!

The HJHS Roadrunner family is proud to cheer on Indian Wells Elementary student Tucker Orton as he prepares to compete in the 2026 Elks Hoop Shoot National Finals on April 18, 2026, at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois. This prestigious event features 72 finalists from across the nation, showcasing the top youth free throw shooters ages 8 through 13.

Tucker will be representing Elks Area 7, and we could not be more excited for him.

Thank you to all of our student athletes and families who have supported Tucker and his family as they travel to Chicago for this incredible opportunity. Tucker is the son of HUSD teachers Dan and Roni Orton, and we are proud to stand behind him.

Good luck, Tucker. We are all rooting for you!

Parents, tomorrow morning starts our 6th through 8th grade Arizona Academic Standards Assessment in ELA and Math. We will be testing on both April 14th and 15th. This is an important opportunity for students to show what they have learned and demonstrate their growth.

Please help set your student up for success by ensuring they arrive at school on time and remain for the full testing session. When students arrive late or are checked out early, they may need to test in a different environment, which can impact their comfort and performance.

A good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast, whether at home or at school, will help students do their very best.
Thank you for your continued support in helping our students feel confident, prepared, and ready to succeed.

Mr. Lang’s 8th grade history class recently brought learning to life with an engaging mock trial experience. Students took on important roles including bailiff, judge, attorneys, expert witnesses, medical witnesses, eyewitnesses, and police officers, representing both the plaintiffs and the defense.

This hands on activity gave students a real understanding of how a trial works and the level of preparation and teamwork required to present a case. Many students fully embraced their roles by getting into character, wearing suits, creating realistic injuries, and even using a wheelchair as part of their presentation.

It was an incredible example of learning by doing, with students actively participating, thinking critically, and building real world skills in a meaningful and memorable way.

Thank you, parents, for making sure your students arrived at school on time and ready to take the AASA Writing Assessment yesterday. It was no April Fool’s joke, our students showed up prepared, focused, and ready to give it their very best.

We are incredibly proud of all of our students for the effort and determination they showed. It was truly a great testing day across our campus. Our 6th graders reached an outstanding 95 percent participation rate, while our 7th and 8th graders came in strong at 92 percent.

This success is a direct reflection of the teamwork between our families, students, and staff. Thank you for your support, encouragement, and commitment to helping our students succeed. We are proud of each and every one of you and grateful to be part of such an amazing school community.

Parents, please take time to talk with your children about the dangers of vaping. We want to be proactive in keeping our campus safe and healthy for everyone.

Vaping is not only harmful to students’ health, but it is also against the law and school rules. Our goal is to keep students in school, learning and thriving.

We appreciate your partnership and support in reinforcing these important conversations at home. Together, we can continue to create a safe, positive environment for all of our students.

We are so proud of our students for their hard work and focus during state testing! Teachers were excited to recognize students who stayed on task and gave their best effort by handing out beeper tickets—great job!

Congratulations to Jasmine Knight, Faith Multine, Shawn Majors, and Michael Martinez, who are pictured here after having their names drawn! Jordan Ruggles was also selected for his hard work, but is not pictured—way to go!

We will continue celebrating student effort with more incentives during each upcoming test session. We’ll be drawing names after each test, and we even have something special planned if we see strong attendance across all three testing days!

Parents, please help us by making sure your student arrives to school on time, well-rested, and ready to do their best. Your support makes a big difference!

Thank you, students, for your dedication—we are cheering you on every step of the way!

Ms. Manning’s 8th grade science class had a blast getting hands-on with science while extracting DNA from strawberries!

This fun and engaging activity gave students the opportunity to see science in action and better understand the building blocks of life. Learning is even more powerful when it’s this memorable (and a little gooey too)!

Parents of our 8th graders,

We want to give you a heartfelt thank you for making sure your student was at school on time and present for both days of AZSCI testing. Your support truly makes a difference. Students perform much better when they are able to test with their own class, in a familiar environment, and with their teacher, rather than completing a makeup test in a different setting.

We would like to thank everyone who participated in our Community and Family Engagement Night. We had close to 300 people in attendance and about 20 informational booths, making it a great evening for our school and community.

A special thank you to the Cal Poly students, SOLV Energy, VESTAS, and Next Power for providing engaging breakout sessions on different forms of energy, including solar and wind, and for sharing valuable career opportunities with our families.

We also want to express our appreciation for our partnership with Heart of America. Through their support, solar panels are being installed on the homes of some of our students who currently lack electricity, making a meaningful difference in their lives.

Thank you again to everyone who helped make this event such a success.
